Direct Mail for Charities – How Action Cancer Raised £86,000 From One Campaign

ction Cancer is a Northern Ireland charity focused on cancer prevention, early detection, and support. Every year, more than 20,000 people engage with its services. The charity runs around 200 mobile screening bus visits across Northern Ireland and screens approximately 8,000 women for breast cancer annually.

However, like many charities, Action Cancer faced real pressure on its fundraising budget. Digital channels were underperforming. Internal admin costs were rising. The charity needed a fresh approach. So it turned to direct mail, and the results were remarkable.

The Challenge: Rising Costs and Falling Donor Engagement

Action Cancer faced several challenges at once. In-house printing and postage costs were increasing steadily. At the same time, digital-only fundraising channels had underperformed, leading to reduced donor engagement and lower income.

The charity needed a campaign that felt personal and trustworthy. It also needed to maximise return on investment within a tight budget. Furthermore, the internal team was stretched, and any solution had to reduce – not add to – their workload.

Previous digital campaigns had struggled to rebuild donor trust. As a result, Action Cancer needed a channel that could reconnect with supporters in a more meaningful way.

[H2] The Solution: A Targeted Direct Mail Campaign Delivered to 10,000 Households

To address these challenges, we designed and delivered a targeted direct mail campaign for charities to 10,000 households across Northern Ireland. The focus was on producing high-quality, personalised letters that spoke directly to donors and reflected Action Cancer’s mission.

We managed the full print and fulfilment process. This removed significant pressure from the charity’s internal team straight away. In addition, bulk postage discounts were applied, with savings passed directly back to Action Cancer.

Crucially, the physical nature of the mailing made a real difference. Supporters received something tangible, a letter they could read, keep, and respond to in their own time. Unlike emails, it did not compete with dozens of other messages in an inbox.

The Results: £86,000 Raised and an 8.6:1 Return on Investment

The campaign delivered strong, measurable results across every metric:

  • 5.6% response rate – well above the typical charity direct mail average of 4–5%
  • Over £86,000 raised from a single campaign
  • 8.6:1 return on investment – every £1 spent generated £8.60 in donations
  • 50% reduction in staff admin time, freeing the team to focus on donor relationships
  • Higher donor trust – supporters specifically highlighted the personal feel of receiving a physical letter

Moreover, feedback consistently showed that donors responded more warmly to physical mail than to email outreach. The campaign rebuilt trust and reconnected Action Cancer with its supporter base in a tangible way.

Why Direct Mail Works for Charities

Direct mail remains one of the most powerful fundraising tools available to charities. Unlike digital messages, physical letters often stay in the home for several days. This gives donors multiple chances to read, consider, and respond.

Letters also feel more personal. They build emotional connection in a way that emails simply cannot. Furthermore, direct mail arrives on kitchen tables, not in spam folders. Responses are easy to track, so charities always know exactly what their campaign has delivered.

For charities operating on tight budgets, this combination of trust, tangibility, and measurable ROI makes direct mail a smart and reliable investment.
